Good exercise involves raising your heart rate and overall stretching and strengthening of your muscles.
However, golf is great exercise compared to lying in your sick bed or sitting in front of the television. What golf does provide is:
- weight bearing movement (good for the spine and retention of calcium in your bones)
- touching your toes
- reaching
- twisting at the waist
- a good walk if you don't rely too much on a golf cart
What golfers know is that being sick and not playing is the kiss of death to your golf game because golfers rely on strong wrists that allow them to hit the ball.
My favorite form of wrist strengthening exercise is to lie in bed on my belly and do 45-50 girls push ups. It's not quite the one armed army sergeant drill, but anyone that follows through on it is likely to see and improvement in their distance they hit the ball. If your ill and the doctor allows it, i.e. you didn't have injury or surgery that prevents it, those 45-50 pushups may save your game.
Meanwhile, the reason I bring this subject up is my husband had surgery. For his recovery, we've begun walks in the neighborhood (short distances). This week, I've agreed to let him on the course for walks and putting. Next week, we may add chips. The hardest golf shot on your body is the full twisting drive. I was pretty impatient with my mother-in-law who just gave up on the fun of leaving the house and at least putting. Putting may seem a bore compared to the full game, still, every minute away from knowing you're not at your best offers so much hope.
